Getting Involved in Your P&C

Classroom-level adjustments +

Getting involved in your school’s P&C is one of the simplest ways to connect with your school community, understand what’s happening, and have a say in things that matter to students and families.

You don’t need special skills, prior experience or lots of spare time. You just need an interest in being involved, in a way that works for you.

This page is for parents and carers who are new to P&Cs, thinking about getting involved, or attending a meeting for the first time.

Why getting involved matters +

P&Cs play an important role in school communities. They help bring parent and carer voices into conversations, support school activities, and strengthen connections between families and schools.

Even small contributions can make a difference. Listening, asking questions, or helping out occasionally all count. Being involved also helps you better understand how decisions are made and how you can raise issues or ideas in a constructive way.

Working in partnership with the school +

Effective support planning works best when:

  • Families and schools share information openly
  • Goals are clear and achievable within the school context
  • Roles and responsibilities are understood
  • Plans focus on supporting participation and learning

Schools aim to be inclusive, but adjustments can sometimes be missed or applied inconsistently. Ongoing communication helps keep support on track.

What “getting started” can look like +

There’s no single right way to begin. For many people, it starts with one small step, such as:

  • attending a P&C meeting to listen and learn
  • helping with a one-off event or activity
  • volunteering in a way that suits your time and interests
  • putting your hand up for a specific, short-term task

It’s okay to start by observing. Turning up does not mean you’re committing to anything. Your level of involvement can change over time, depending on what’s happening in your life.

Keeping expectations realistic and effective +

P&Cs are made up of parents and carers from all walks of life. Meetings are usually informal and welcoming, with a focus on:

  • sharing information
  • discussing issues affecting the school community
  • making decisions together
  • supporting school activities and priorities

Every P&C is a little different. Some meetings are quieter, others more energetic. It’s normal to hear new terms or processes at first. You don’t need to understand everything straight away.

Asking questions, taking time to find your feet, and learning as you go are all part of the process.

Ways to build confidence +

If you’re feeling a bit unsure, these simple steps can help:

  • read the meeting agenda in advance
  • ask another member what to expect
  • sit back and listen until you feel comfortable contributing
  • attend online if that option is available
  • remember that your perspective as a parent or carer is valuable

There’s no pressure to speak up straight away. Being there is enough.
