P&C Member Representatives

What this role is about

Each P&C appoints a member representative to act as the link between their school community and ACT Parents. This role helps ensure parent and carer perspectives from individual schools inform system-level conversations about public education in the ACT.

The role is about connection and communication, not decision-making or acting independently.

Why this role matters

ACT Parents represents the collective voice of public school parents and carers. Member representatives help make that voice stronger by:

  • sharing what’s happening in their school community
  • bringing questions or concerns forward
  • helping their P&C stay informed about broader issues and opportunities

This two-way flow of information supports better advocacy and more informed decision-making across the system.

What a member representative does

A P&C member representative typically:

  • attends ACT Parents meetings
  • shares relevant updates from ACT Parents with their P&C
  • raises issues or themes from their school community with ACT Parents
  • helps ACT Parents understand what matters to families at a local level by encouraging participation in surveys, forums and events.

Each P&C may also nominate an alternate representative who can attend when the primary representative is unavailable.

How representatives work within their P&C

Good practice includes:

  • consulting with the P&C before raising issues
  • reporting back after ACT Parents meetings
  • using agreed P&C processes to form views

Member representatives:

  • do not act independently of their P&C
  • do not speak on behalf of the P&C without consultation
  • should reflect collective views, not personal opinions

Include a standing agenda item at P&C meetings for “ACT Parents updates” or “issues to raise” can make this role easier and more effective.

Support available

ACT Parents provides members with:

  • meeting information and resources
  • updates on issues affecting public education
  • guidance on how to raise matters constructively

If you’re unsure how to approach an issue or what’s appropriate to share, it’s okay to ask.

If you’re interested in becoming a member representative or want to understand how the role works in practice, contact your P&C.
