Raising Issues
Respectfully & Effectively

Raising issues respectfully & effectively

Raising concerns with a school can feel daunting, especially when emotions are involved. Clear, respectful communication helps ensure your message is heard and keeps conversations focused on supporting students.

Why this matters

Most parents and carers raise issues because they want things to improve. How a concern is raised can influence how it is received and how quickly progress is made.

Approaching conversations thoughtfully helps:

  • Reduce misunderstandings
  • Keep relationships constructive
  • Focus attention on solutions rather than conflict
  • Improve outcomes for students

Being respectful does not mean minimising concerns. It means expressing them clearly and purposefully.

Tips for raising issues well

When raising an issue:

  • Be clear about the concern and why it matters
  • Use specific examples where possible
  • Focus on the impact on your child or the school community
  • Avoid assumptions about intent
  • Stay calm, even if the issue is frustrating

It can help to frame concerns around outcomes, for example:

  • “What support can help here?”
  • “How can we work together on this?”

Keep the focus on problem-solving

Effective conversations aim to:

  • Clarify what’s happening
  • Understand what support is already in place
  • Agree on next steps or timeframes

You can ask questions and seek clarification without escalating or accusing.
