Supporting Your Child's Learning

Supporting your child's learning

Why this matters

Parents and carers play a crucial role in supporting children’s learning, wellbeing and confidence at school. You don’t need to be an expert in the curriculum to make a meaningful difference. What matters most is being informed, engaged and connected to your child’s learning journey.

Practical ways to support learning

Support looks different at every stage of schooling, but often includes:

Staying informed

Understanding what your child is learning, how progress is reported, and what support is available if challenges arise.

Building routines

Helping with organisation, attendance, homework habits and preparation for learning.

Encouraging curiosity and confidence

Talking about school, celebrating effort, and supporting resilience when learning feels hard.

Working with teachers

Attending meetings, asking questions, and raising concerns early if something doesn’t feel right.

Supporting wellbeing

Learning and wellbeing are closely linked. Feeling safe, supported and included matters.

What to expect from schools

ACT public schools are responsible for providing teaching, assessment, feedback and support.

Parents and carers should expect clear communication, opportunities to discuss progress, and reasonable adjustments where needed.
