When things feel stuck: what to do next

Sometimes, despite best efforts, issues don’t move forward or conversations go in circles. Knowing what to do next can help reduce stress and restore momentum.

Why this matters

When concerns feel unresolved, parents and carers can feel powerless or unsure how to proceed. Having clear options helps prevent frustration from escalating and supports fair, measured next steps.

Signs things may be stuck +

You might feel stuck if:

  • The same concerns keep coming up without progress .
  • Agreed actions haven’t occurred within a reasonable timeframe
  • Communication has broken down
  • You’re unsure who to speak to next

This doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. It often means the situation needs a different approach.

Practical next steps +

If things feel stuck, consider:

  • Requesting a follow-up conversation
  • Asking for clarity about timelines or responsibilities
  • Speaking with a different staff member or school leader
  • Summarising concerns in writing to ensure shared understanding

Escalation works best when it is gradual and purposeful.

Knowing when to seek external support +

Some situations benefit from advice outside the school, particularly where:

  • Processes are unclear
  • Issues cross school and system boundaries
  • Emotions are running high
  • You want to sense-check next steps

Seeking advice early can help avoid unnecessary conflict.

That’s why ACT Parents is calling on the ACT Government to fund a parent advocacy service, which would support families when school-based processes are not enough.

How You Can Help Us Build this Support +

You can help strengthen the case for a parent advocacy service by adding your voice.

Parents and carers can:

  • Subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed about this work
  • Become a member and support our advocacy
  • Share your experiences through consultation and feedback opportunities

Together, parent voices help show why this support is needed and why it matters.
