Where to Raise Different
Types of Concerns

Where to raise different types of concerns

Not all concerns are the same. Some relate to individual students, while others affect groups of students or the wider school community. Understanding the difference helps parents and carers raise issues in the most effective way.

Why this matters

Raising issues through the best channel:

  • Increases the chance of meaningful action
  • Prevents concerns from being misdirected
  • Helps schools respond appropriately
  • Supports fair and consistent decision-making

It also helps parents feel confident they are taking the right approach.

Shared issues

Shared issues may include:

  • Matters affecting multiple students or families
  • School-wide practices or policies
  • Systemic concerns

These issues may be suitable to raise:

  • Through a P&C
  • With school leadership
  • Through consultation or feedback processes

Choosing the best pathway

If you’re unsure:

  • Ask whether the issue affects only your child or others as well
  • Consider whether the concern is about practice, policy or process
  • Seek advice before escalating

Choosing the best pathway can make a big difference to outcomes.
